Pablo Mari’s Arsenal wages make a return to Brazil highly unlikely for the Premier League loanee, reporter Jorge Nicola explains on his YouTube channel while addressing rumours regarding a potential move to Sao Paulo.

Remarkably, the Monza loanee could be back on a Serie A pitch in just three months’ time. Mari was discharged from hospital a couple of days ago after suffering non-life-threatening injuries in a knife attack last month. And, according to CEO Adriano Galliani, a return to full fitness early in 2023 is not out of the question.

The 29-year-old centre-half had been in excellent form for the Monza, starring during a famous 1-0 victory over Juventus.

And, while a return to Arsenal feels unlikely with William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Rob Holding and Ben White all ahead of him in Mikel Arteta’s pecking order, Mari surely won’t have many problems finding a new club when his loan spell at Monza comes to an end.

According to Nicola, however, the 2019 Copa Libertadores winner looks set to continue his career this side of the Atlantic. Mari’s wages, he says, make a potential return to South America a bit of a non-starter.

“I checked with someone from Sao Paulo to see if Mari had any chance of being signed,” Nicola explains. “The answer was ‘none’.

“He doesn’t see any chance of Pablo Mari leaving Italian football at the moment to come and play in Brazil. (Mari’s) salary is completely unrealistic (for a club in Brazil to afford).”

Mari, who set Arsenal back a cool £14 million, reportedly earns around £85,000-a-week at the Gunners (Spotrac).

“A very serious thing. We were sick (when we heard the news),” says Monza team-mate Andrea Petanga, describing the mood in the camp after hearing that Mari had been injured in last month’s attack.

“Nobody believed it. Before the game (against Bologna last month), Pablo sent us a video message that touched us a lot. He is one of our leaders and we hope he can come back soon.”
