Speculation is rife that Arsenal will be getting Lucas Torreira back in January.
The Uruguay international only joined Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan in early October.
But the former Sampdoria star is struggling for regular football under Diego Simeone and according to Tuttomercatoweb, an early return to Arsenal is on the cards.
Torreira has only managed 182 minutes of Primera Liga football with Atleti this season but, going by his latest performance in the Copa Del Rey, he isn’t throwing in the towel just yet.
The 24-year-old started and finished Wednesday night’s 3-0 win away to Cardassar – and going by his stats, Torreira made quite a statement.
The South American managed 134 touches of the ball, made 119 passes – and completed a staggering 111 of them – and also set up one of the goals.
You could argue that such a performance would’ve been a lot more impressive against, say, Barcelona or somebody, because Cardassar are in the fourth tier of Spanish football.
But the Arsenal man – who earns £75,000 per week in North London – can only dazzle against who he’s chosen to play against and maybe, just maybe, he has given himself a lifeline here.
Despite failing to impress Mikel Arteta, Torreira is by no means a poor footballer and his first season in North London under Unai Emery proved as much.
And although things aren’t working in the Spanish capital right now, he’s certainly tenacious and dogged enough to make a good fist of it yet.
