13/2 for Ibrox job: Landing Karanka may give Rangers best chance of tempting Mourinho into McTominay deal

AItor Karanka has been touted for the Rangers job.

Rangers’ search for a new manager goes on, and former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka is a name which has attracted some attention over recent days.

The Spaniard has been out of work since losing his job with Boro back in March, but having gained promotion to the Premier League in 2016, he remains highly thought of as a manager.

As seen on Oddschecker, Karanka is now as short as 13/2 for the Rangers job, and whilst Derek McInnes remains the favourite, a move for Karanka could be a possibility if the Gers can’t land Aberdeen boss McInnes.

If Karanka does end up heading to Ibrox, then it may present Rangers with their only possible chance of landing Manchester United’s Scottish midfielder, Scott McTominay.

The Mirror report that United have snubbed interest from Rangers in signing McTominay in January, with Jose Mourinho so far reluctant to let the youngster leave on loan in 2018.

However, Karanka served as Mourinho’s assistant at Real Madrid, and the pair have maintained a strong relationship over the years, with Mourinho often sending Blues players to Middlesbrough.

Jamal Blackman, Tomas Kalas, Kenneth Omeruo, Nathaniel Chalobah and Patrick Bamford were all farmed out on loan to play under Karanka during Mourinho’s time as Chelsea manager, with the Portuguese boss clearly trusting his former right hand man to develop his palyers.

With Mourinho standing firm on McTominay, Karanka may be the only way Rangers can land the midfielder, and a move may become much more likely should Karanka land the Ibrox job ahead of McInnes.
