As Ivan Toney placed the ball on the penalty spot, with just eight minutes remaining in Rotherham, you didn’t need Derren Brown to tell you what would happen next.

Seconds later, Brentford’s £5 million summer signing was celebrating his 13th goal in 17 games – and his third in succession.

The Premier League looked a million miles away for Thomas Frank’s side when Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma – two thirds of that much-vaunted ‘BMW’ frontline – departed after that heartbreaking play-off final defeat to Fulham.

But, when it comes to replacing star players, nobody does it better than Brentford.

While there were certainly doubts about whether Toney could thrive in the Championship after a sluggish start to life in the capital, the critics are now as quiet as a church mouse at the Crucible.

And every goal that Toney scores must feel like another sprinkling of salt in the gaping wounds covering Celtic from head to toe.

“I know Neil Lennon wanted him desperately and spoke to Ivan a couple of times,” Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony told the Hard Truth podcast, explaining why Toney moved to Brentford rather than Glasgow.

“Ivan was high on their list and it probably would’ve appealed to him because Celtic is one of the biggest clubs in Britain.”

MacAnthony suggests that it was a lack of funds that cost Celtic the chance to sign arguably the hottest centre-forward in English football, with Brentford instead meeting Peterborough’s £5 million price-tag while selling Watkins and Benrahma for a combined fee of around £50 million.

North of the border, as Lennon hangs onto his job after a miserable run of two wins in nine games, Celtic talisman Odsonne Edouard continues to stutter through games; a poor impression of the man who ripped Scottish football apart last term.

Albian Ajeti, the summer signing from West Ham, has failed to score in his last nine games after a bright start to life in green and white.

So far, Edouard and Ajeti have scored 13 times between them; as many as Toney has all on his own.
