Throughout the January transfer window, Newcastle didn’t make many friends as they used their newfound riches to pinch key players.
One of these vital players was Chris Wood, who Burnley were pinning their hopes on as they look to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
However, Newcastle – in desperate times – decided to activate his £25m release clause, which was said to have left Burnley furious (Guardian).
In response, Sean Dyche signed VfL Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst for £12m, in a move which could soon humiliate Newcastle.
Wout Weghorst can outshine Chris Wood
Last season, Weghorst impressively scored 25 goals in 41 games over in Germany, which is a stunning achievement.
The 29-year-old has continued his decent form with seven goals this season, and at £12m, he looks to be a real bargain for Burnley.

In Wood’s case, he only has three goals this season, and in comparison to Weghorst’s tally of 25, the 30-year-old only scored 12 goals last term.
Therefore, you could argue that Burnley have actually swapped Wood with a better forward, and made a profit of £13m in doing so.
Newcastle could be humiliated
If we get to May and Weghorst’s goals keep Burnley up at Newcastle’s expense, it will be very embarrassing for Eddie Howe.

The entirety of Burnley will revel in it.
In truth, the fact Newcastle didn’t instead scour Europe for someone like Weghorst suggests the signing of Wood was a moment of panic.
Only time will tell what happens, but it’s entirely possible that Weghorst outshines Wood on his way to saving Burnley.
