Newcastle are expected to sign a new player or two for Eddie Howe in January, with plenty of speculation surrounding James Maddison.

According to the Northern Echo, the Magpies have made Leicester’s No.10 their primary target for the January transfer window.

Maddison is currently getting on well with the likes of Callum Wilson, Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier at the World Cup with England.

Now, the latter of that trio has posted something very interesting on Instagram.

What’s the story?

Well, Trippier – who Newcastle paid just £12m for – posted a photo of himself alongside Maddison in Qatar, which interestingly included a winky face emoji.

To add more fuel to the fire, the Leicester talisman reposted the image on his own Instagram account.

Maddison has even addressed links to Newcastle when speaking to Josh Denzel in the Lions’ Den on England’s YouTube channel, revealing that the aforementioned Magpies trio have been discussing those links with him.

By all accounts, there is certainly something peculiar going on with Maddison and Newcastle.

You can certainly understand why Howe wants to sign the 26-year-old.

Maddison has arguably been the best attacking midfielder in England this season, if not across the whole of Europe, scoring seven goals and setting up a further four in 13 Premier League appearances.

Leicester have also been struggling down the bottom of the Premier League, which makes his efforts all the more impressive.

Newcastle could be deadly with James Maddison

Just imagine a lineup in which Newcastle have two set-piece specialists such as Trippier and Maddison stood over dead ball situations.

Opponents would be hugely fearful of conceding corners or freekicks against the Magpies, especially as they will have giants such as Dan Burn, Joelinton and Sven Botman waiting in the box.

Be sure to keep an eye on the situation involving Maddison, as a move is looking more likely by the day.
