Jonjo Shelvey has become one of the first Newcastle United players to speak out about the potential takeover on the Beautiful Game podcast.

Newcastle’s squad have been very quiet since news broke that the club could be purchased from Mike Ashley in the near future.

Newcastle are now in the final stages of a takeover bid, and Shelvey admits that he is desperate for information like most supporters.

The £12 million midfielder (Sky) says that Newcastle’s players have largely been kept in the dark over happenings.

But the England international feels it would be positive if Newcastle’s takeover does go through smoothly in the coming days.

“We’re the same as the fans, we don’t know what’s going on,” Shelvey admitted. “I read Sky Sports to see if there’s been any updates, we don’t get told anything.

“If it happens it happens, if it doesn’t it doesn’t. I know the club has been in this situation on numerous occasions but that club pays your wages and it doesn’t matter who’s in charge, you go in and do your job every day.

“But for the fans they want a change of ownership, and that would be great for them and for the fans and for the city.”

Newcastle have been waiting for their takeover bid to be confirmed by the Premier League for weeks now.

It has been an anxious time for Newcastle supporters, who are largely desperate to see their club change hands.

Newcastle fans have accused their current owner, Mike Ashley, of showing a lack of ambition, but they would immediately become one of the richest clubs in world football, if the current takeover goes ahead.
