CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs has claimed on Twitter that Bristol City want a fee of £12million for wonderkid midfielder Alex Scott with six Premier League clubs interested – and that has got to convince Liverpool of a move.

Scott has been superb for The Robins since breaking into the side. Aggressive, able to score a goal from midfield and with bundles of energy – he has played 70 times. Scoring four, creating seven, and picking up 21 yellows.

The 20-year-old is attracting plenty of interest in the Premier League. Jacobs reports that six clubs from England’s top tier are looking at Scott. Tottenham, Wolves, Brentford, Brighton, Leicester and Bournemouth are interested.

But Liverpool should join that race, for a number of reasons. The major one being that the Reds desperately need more depth in the middle of the park for the second half of the season. That is, even if Arthur remains on loan.

So, Liverpool need depth in midfield. Jude Bellingham of course, has been strongly linked. Argentina’s World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez, too. They would be incredibly expensive signings – and Liverpool need more than one.

If the Reds do move for a midfielder of that expense, then they need to sign one or two on the cheap side that can provide depth. In the summer, as things stand, four central-midfield options will leave Anfield under Jurgen Klopp.

James Milner, Naby Keita, Arthur and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. That leaves Liverpool so light. Thiago and Jordan Henderson are in their thirties. A young, English midfielder would be perfect – even if the Reds do get Bellingham.

So, a £12million move to sign an England Under-20 international in the form of Scott would be perfect. Energetic, aggressive, technically superb. Scott is a ready-made Liverpool midfielder and for £12million, he is ideal.
