Rafael Leao to Liverpool was a transfer that was touted back in May.

According to La Repubblica, Liverpool are among the Premier League outfits interested in signing the 23-year-old AC Milan winger.

Leao, who scored 14 goals for the Serie A champions this past season [Transfermarkt], is only contracted to the San Siro club until 2024.

And La Stampa in Italy have reported this morning that the Portugal international has rejected their latest contract offer.

The report claims that Leao had a proposal of a two-year extension – and a handsome pay rise – on the table and has turned it down.

Rafael Leao to Liverpool?

If Jurgen Klopp and Fenway Sports Group are genuinely interested, it’ll cost them a massive sum.

That’s because Leao has a release clause of around £129 million with the Italian giants so even without this contract refusal, Milan are still protected in a major way.

It’s also worth pointing out that Liverpool have already broken their transfer record this summer, signing Darwin Nunez in an £85 million deal.

Although Klopp and Julian Ward might be signing additional players this summer, it seems massively unlikely that the Anfield faithful will be getting a nine-figure footballer between now and the end of the window.
