Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has told Sky Sports that he is desperate to remain at Ibrox beyond the end of the season – with his current deal due to expire in May. Davis is a Rangers icon, after more than seven years at Ibrox.
Davis, who turned 37 in January, remains an important part of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side. He has played 31 times for the Gers in 21-22, though he has fallen down the pecking order – completing 90 minutes 15 times.
The midfielder has been a legend for Rangers, clocking up 342 appearances over the course of two spells. Ross Wilson spoke earlier in the week about his future, claiming it is up to the player – along with Allan McGregor.
Steven Gerrard re-signed Davis in 2019. The 128-time Northern Ireland ace is out of contract at Rangers at the end of the month, but he has made it clear where he sees his future. Davis wants to stay at Rangers next season.
“We’ll sit down and have discussions,” Davis told Sky Sports. “I’d love to be a part of this club moving forward. It’s a huge club, I’ve spent a lot of my career here. Enjoyed every moment of it, hopefully there is more to come.”
Davis wants Rangers stay: Could Gers offer a player-coach role?
Ryan Jack, John Lundstram, James Sands, Glen Kamara and more currently offer plenty of competition for Davis in midfield. With a Champions League campaign potentially on the horizon, signings will come in this summer.
So, his game time is only going to reduce. This season, 33, if he features in both finals. Next season, it might be less than 20 if he remains – so, what else can he offer the Gers? An Ibrox legend, a player-coach role might be ideal.
