Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo has told The Daily Mail that Graham Potter’s Chelsea wanted to sign him from PSV in the January transfer window.
However, Gakpo has said that he only wanted to move to Liverpool.
The 23-year-old Netherlands international forward has added that he believes that he can improve and develop under manager Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
The 23-year-old cost Liverpool £35 million in transfer fees (Sky Sports) and is earning £120,000 per week as salary (Football Insider).
The forward has not scored or given an assist in three Premier League matches for Liverpool so far.
Gakpo has also made three appearances in the FA Cup for the Reds.
Liverpool star Cody Gakpo says Chelsea wanted him
Gakpo said: “Then when I heard about interest from Liverpool in the winter (before January transfer window), I didn’t think about anything else. There was also Chelsea maybe but I already had my mind made up.
“This is a good place for me to improve and develop and eventually show who I can be.”

Good decision
In our view, Cody Gakpo made a good decision in picking Liverpool over Chelsea in the January transfer window.
Yes, we know that Chelsea are a big club and a global brand, but so are Liverpool.
The Blues made a number of signings in the summer of 2022 and in the January transfer window, and it would have been hard for Gakpo to get into the team,
And who knows, Chelsea could continue their spending spree in the summer of 2023 as well.
Now, of course, Liverpool have a good and competitive attacking unit and Gakpo would have to work hard to play week in and week out.
But, we have seen players improve under Klopp, and Gakpo do so as well.
