Sunderland pulled off a coup last summer when they beat a host of sides to win the race for Queens Park teenager Lee Connelly.
Rangers, Celtic, and Burnley were all reported by the Daily Record to be keen on the young forward, but Sunderland did not hesitate to tie him to a deal after a successful trial.
After an early injury, Connelly has made a good early impact in Sunderland’s academy.
This week he netted against rivals Newcastle in an under-18 game, his 12th goal in 20 starts.
Connelly created headlines last summer by scoring 10 goals in five pre-season friendlies for his team.
He did not make his competitive academy debut until September but has kicked on since shaking off an injury.
The youngster is still only 16 and so it is premature to suggest David Moyes will be calling on him to help the first team this season, but he is making a case for himself to step up to under-23 football next campaign.
If they were not already, the Scottish side could soon be regretting letting him leave so early.
