Leeds and Manchester United were both rejected by Sergio Gomez back in August as he chose to join another Premier League side.
It was Manchester City who wrapped up an £11m deal to sign the Spaniard from RSC Anderlecht in Belgium, after losing Oleksandr Zinchenko, another player who can operate at left-back or in midfield, to Arsenal.
However, things have not gone well for Gomez in England, and he probably now wishes he completed a move to Manchester United or Leeds instead.
What’s the story?
Well, the 22-year-old is amazingly yet to start a single Premier League game, as we approach the start of 2023.
It was La Gazzetta dello Sport (print edition, March 26, 2022) who revealed that Manchester United wanted to sign Gomez.
Elsewhere, TEAMtalk claimed that Leeds wanted the Spain Under-21 international at Elland Road.
Pep Guardiola, as we all know, has a wealth of options at his disposal, and has so far preferred to use Joao Cancelo at left-back instead of Gomez.
As aforesaid, the Manchester City No.21 can also operate in midfield, but he has so far failed to get ahead of superstars such as Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan in midfield.
There is no shame in that, and Gomez surely knew things would be difficult when he arrived at the Etihad Stadium.
However, he surely expected to have at least one Premier League start to his name at this stage of the season.
So far, Gomez has made five substitute appearances in the Premier League, totalling 106 minutes.
Leeds should revisit interest in Sergio Gomez
In our view, Leeds should make another attempt to sign Gomez in January after his tough start to life in Manchester.
Jesse Marsch is still in need of a left-back with Pascal Struijk covering for Junior Firpo in that department at the moment.
Every footballer wants to play regularly, so it is certainly worth getting in touch with Gomez in January to see if he’d be interested in joining Leeds.
