Patrick Bamford has revealed how his move to Leeds United came about.
The 26-year-old joined the Whites for a reported £10 million [BBC Sport] from Middlesbrough almost two years ago.
Tony Pulis was the manager of Boro at the time, and Bamford has revealed that the Welshman pulled him to one side during a pre-season friendly to tell him that he was going to Leeds.
Bamford told a Deliveroo Q&A on United’s official Twitter account: “I heard about Leeds being interested and my agent told me. That obviously pricked my ears up, but then we was playing a pre-season friendly against Sunderland. I was supposed to start and Tony Pulis pulled me aside and said ‘I’m taking you out of the starting team and you know why don’t you?’ and I said no. He said ‘Leeds have put a bid in and we’ve accepted it’.”
Bamford has been a success at Leeds overall, scoring 22 Championship goals in 51 starts.
It isn’t a brilliant return, but it’s evident that Marcelo Bielsa likes his number nines to be more than a goalscorer and therefore it’s unfair to judge the former Chelsea youth solely on how often he finds the net.
His hold-up and link play have seen the Elland Road faithful begin to appreciate him much more in comparison to his first season, much of which was spent on the sidelines.
And if all goes well, Bamford will be playing for Leeds in the Premier League next season, as Bielsa’s side sit top of the Championship with a seven-point cushion in the automatic promotion places.
