Mikel Merino has told The Chronicle that “good things will come” when asked if he would ever consider returning to Newcastle United. Merino only spent a season at Newcastle, initially on loan from Borussia Dortmund.

Merino, 25, joined Newcastle in the summer of 2017 on loan from Dortmund after the Toon returned to the Premier League under Rafa Benitez. Not long after, the Spain international was signed permanently.

He only played 25 times for Newcastle but it was enough to convince Sociedad to sign Merino for £10million (Football Espana) in 2018. He has since gone on to play for Spain – and clock up 144 appearances for Sociedad.

A regular for Spain, Merino was asked by the Chronicle if he would consider a return to Newcastle in the future. He responded by saying he is focused on Sociedad, but if he continues to improve – good things will come.

“The Premier League was an amazing season. Newcastle was great for me. I have good memories but, right now, I’m focused on the present. If you want your future to be bright, you have to give your best in the day to day.

“I’m only looking forward to help my team, to improve myself. I’m sure if I do that in the future, good things will come,” Merino told the Chronicle, when he was asked if he would consider moving back to Tyneside.

Newcastle return for Merino? Sociedad man a stunning signing

Merino showed in his 25 appearances for Newcastle that he was a midfielder with supreme quality. Creativity from deep, an enging, superb passing. But there was a rawness about his performances at Newcastle.

What he has since added to his game, is a calmness. An experience that has seen him break into Luis Enrique’s Spain squad. He has added almost 150 games at the top level to his CV. He would massively improve Newcastle.
