Liverpool selling Danny Ward for £10 million is both brillliant business and a potential error.
Liverpool are on the verge of cashing in on goalkeeper Danny Ward.
It is great business from Liverpool’s board to manage to get £10 million for a player who did not play a single league minute last season.
The 25-year-old had a wasted year in his career in 2017/18, having helped Huddersfield win promotion a year earlier.
Liverpool have done extremely well to get Leicester to pay up an eight figure fee for the goalkeeper.
But while it is a shrewd piece of business, on the pitch it could be an error.
Ward’s departure has been accelerated by the arrival of Alisson from Roma, Liverpool’s new number one.
Yet Ward would have been the perfect back up.
Simon Mignolet has no desire to spend a season on the bench and will push for a move, and Ward’s departure means Loris Karius is likely to be Alisson’s deputy.
This is a risky move, as playing mistake prone Karius is just a gamble which Liverpool do not need to take.
In the event of Alisson being injured or suspended, calling on Karius could unsettle the defence, and Danny Ward would be a better option.
Liverpool will have to hope that the decision to stick with Karius as Alisson’s back-up instead of Ward does not backfire.
