Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has been offered a return to Argentine outfit Racing Club after missing out on a move to Everton in the final few days of the summer transfer window, as reported by The Sun.
For many, the prospect of earning £100,000-a-week at Old Trafford is the stuff of dreams.
But when you’ve spent the last five years stuck on the bench and watching your prime years pass by before your very eyes, you can understand that life as United’s back-up goalkeeper could get a little tiresome.
Romero has dropped from second to third in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s pecking order thanks to the return of Dean Henderson.
And, according to The Sun, the 96-time Argentine international wants to terminate that £100,000-a-week contract in order to find a club where he will be free to play more regularly than the odd cup cameo every few months.
The Star reported that Romero was left ‘seething’ after learning that a move to Everton in October had fallen through.
The Toffees wanted the former Sampdoria stopper to provide competition for Jordan Pickford but, understandably, didn’t want to pay £10 million for a man who will be 34 when the season comes to an end.
It remains to be seen, however, if United’s stance has softened with one of Argentina’s biggest clubs offering Romero a return to where it all began.
“I dream of signing Chiquito [Romero], but he has to come with the conviction of wanting to return, knowing that he’s not going to earn in dollars or the amount of money he earns in Europe,” Racing chief Victor Blanco told Radio Colonia, translated by The Sun.
Romero rose through the ranks at Racing but made just four appearances for La Academia before joining AZ Alkmaar in 2007.
