Tim Sherwood has claimed that Newcastle United may sack Eddie Howe if this season results in relegation from the Premier League.

Howe is charged with the task of leading the Magpies to safety.

But it’s a tall order because at the moment, Newcastle are 19th in the Premier League table and five points adrift of safety.

Howe begins his reign next Saturday with a visit of Brentford.

But Sherwood has told Optus Sport that Saudi Public Investment Fund and secondary stakeholders could axe the 43-year-old coach if he’s unable to preserve United’s top-flight status.

He said: “If he doesn’t keep them in the Premier League, we might be talking about a new manager next season. I think 100 percent they have all their eggs in the staying up basket. They have to. It would be an embarrassment for a club that’s just been taken over to get relegated.”

Week by week

Relegation is definitely a possibility.

But there’s no use in Howe or any Newcastle player thinking that far ahead.

Remember, this is a club without a Premier League win from 11 games so far this season.

First and foremost, Howe needs to break that drought and it could, in theory, lead to Newcastle picking up a head of steam.

Five points is a big gap but it isn’t massive and it’s a deficit that Howe himself will feel confident in overturning.

The 43-year-old made a point of not making any promises with regards to keeping the Magpies up and that’s what you want.

Howe needs to manage Newcastle on a week-by-week basis.
