Speaking on the Highbury Squad YouTube channel, Kevin Campbell has claimed that Arsenal have got to sign Mat Ryan on a permanent deal.

The Australian goalkeeper joined the Gunners on loan in the January window, and while he hasn’t played all that much for the London club, Campbell is seemingly happy to have him at the Emirates for the foreseeable future.

“I think it surprised us didn’t it? It surprised us when Arsenal made the move to get Mat Ryan, and I think everybody was pretty happy with it to be honest, Premiership proven goalkeeper,” Campbell said.

“I think you’ve got to keep him, 100 per cent you’ve got to keep him and I don’t think money or the contract is going to be a problem with Mat Ryan and I think he’s going to be more than ok.”

Whether or not Arsenal do sign Ryan remains to be seen.

The 59-cap international is still under contract at Brighton until 2022, and while he seems to be out of favour at the Amex, Arsenal will still have to pay a fee to land him.

Campbell says that money and a contract won’t be a problem, but the question does remain whether or not Ryan is willing to sign away a few years of his career to playing as a backup, as it seems unlikely that he’s going to be Mikel Arteta’s number one anytime soon.

This is certainly a deal that’s possible in the summer, but whether or not it’s one that Arsenal opt to make happen is another matter entirely.
