Barry Bannan has taken to Twitter to share his thoughts on Aston Villa sacking Dean Smith, as Steven Gerrard arrives to replace him.

What’s the story?

Well, earlier today, Aston Villa announced the appointment of Gerrard on a three-and-a-half year contract.

However, before the announcement was made, Bannan took to Twitter to reveal that he thought it was an ‘appalling’ decision to sack Smith.

You can see the 27-cap Scotland international’s tweet in full below.

Smith was handed his P45 by the Villans after he oversaw five consecutive defeats, and just two wins from his last ten games.

Aston Villa wasted no time in offloading the 50-year-old, and Gerrard has swiftly been appointed as his replacement.

Were Aston Villa right to replace Dean Smith with Steven Gerrard?

In our view, it was a very harsh decision from Aston Villa.

Smith had worked wonders at Villa Park to drag the Villans from the middle of the Championship back to the Premier League.

He also helped oversee the development of a £100m player, and brought Aston Villa’s identity back to the club.

As a boyhood Aston Villa fan, everything good that Smith did at Villa Park had that extra special feeling, as he and the fanbase were one.

Gerrard will be a success, in our view, as he has proven himself to be an astute tactician and man manager at Rangers.

However, that doesn’t make Aston Villa’s decision to axe Smith any less ruthless.

We don’t necessarily think it was an ‘appalling’ move like Bannan does, but it certainly showed that whatever you’ve done in the past means nothing.

Without a doubt, football management is one of the most ruthless industries around, as Smith knows better than anyone.
