Everton’s striker Wayne Rooney (C) heads in the rebound after his penalty was saved
Everton’s final game under David Unsworth was going to plan at half time, as the Toffees grabbed a 2-0 lead over West Ham United thanks to two Wayne Rooney goals.
Unsworth’s spell as caretaker boss is finally coming to an end over a month since Ronald Koeman’s departure, with Sam Allardyce in attendance at tonight’s game against West Ham ahead of his appointment.
With Allardyce watching on, Everton served up an impressive first half performance, dominating against a disappointing West Ham side, led by former Everton boss David Moyes.
Everton’s Wayne Rooney celebrates scoring their second goal against West Ham
Wayne Rooney opened as Dominic Calvert-Lewin went through on goal, only to be brought down by Joe Hart, handing Rooney the chance to score from the penalty spot.
Rooney’s penalty was saved by former England teammate Hart, but the rebound fell kindly to Rooney, who headed home to put Everton 1-0 up – and he wasn’t done there.
Rooney added a second before half time, as Tom Davies’ deflected pass found its way to Rooney at the back post, and he tucked away a smart finish for 2-0.

With Everton going into half time 2-0 up, Jamie Carragher took to Twitter to suggest that the Toffees deserved their lead, adding that Rooney’s first was a stonewall penalty.
Carragher added that Rooney was the best player on the pitch and West Ham were ‘awful’, which led to Moyes substituting Pedro Obiang for Diafra Sakho at half time.
