Who will replace Harry Redknapp at Spurs?
Here are 11 in the frame…
David Moyes
The Everton boss is the bookies favourite, and many believe he needs to move on from Goodison Park for a new challenge. At Everton he faces yet another year on a shoestring budget- this is his chance to change it. Despite his successes, he has never won silverware with the Toffees, and may fancy his chances in North London. This could be the right move at the right time.
Andre Villas-Boas
AVB is a man with a point to prove after his disappointing tenure at Chelsea. Yet he earlier proven he is a winner, leading Porto to the Portuguese title and the Europa League, and he is so young that he offers Spurs a real chance to build for the future. Fans will have reservations after his Chelsea flop though.
Roberto Martinez
Martinez like Moyes has never won a trophy but his exploits with lesser teams have earned him plaudits. He came close to going to Liverpool but at the moment is still Wigan boss. Again he may find it hard to stand out in a very competitive race. The attractive football his sides play will appeal to Spurs fans.
Rafa Benitez
Rafa is a smart tactician and one with a point to prove. He came close to leading Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2009 and is a Champions League winner. He has been out of work since 2010 and is said to be keen to get back into work with a ‘top job.’ Levy would be amiss not to strongly consider him.
Jurgen Klinsmann
Klinsmann has to be considered as an outsider in view of the fact he has recently started a job with the USA national team. Still, as a former White Hart Lane legend he could appeal to a number of Spurs fans, even though his club football experience is limited. It would be a brave choice to go with him.
Fabio Capello
Capello is a proven winner, a league champion in Serie A and La Liga, and knows how to get the job done. Does he have the motivation for one last challenge? Can he be bothered with the English press? After how his time with England ended, he has a point to prove, and the irony of him replacing Redknapp rather than the other way around will not be lost.
Laurent Blanc
The France manager has helped his country go 22 games without defeat and is one of the most revered managers in Europe at present. Everybody from Inter Milan to Manchester United to Chelsea have been linked, and Spurs should enquire as to his availability once the Euros are over, if they can wait that long. Many will argue they cannot afford to.
Slaven Bilic
Another Euro 2012 manager, Bilic is to leave Croatia after the tournament this summer. He is highly coveted and will walk into a job, many Spurs fans hope it is with them. He has been linked with the job before and this could be his time, but like Blanc, whether Spurs can wait is an issue. He is reported to have a deal with Lokomotiv Moscow – Levy could enquire whether there is any chance of a last minute change of heart.
Didier Deschamps
Deschamps has been Marseilles manager since 2009, winning the league in his first season there. He helped Monaco reach the Champions League final back in 2004, and oversaw one of the toughest times in Juventus recent history, guiding them to promotion from Serie B in 2007.
Frank Rijkaard
Rijkaard is currently coaching in Saudi Arabia, where many say he is being wasted. A former Champions League winning manager with Barcelona in 2006, the Dutchman deserves credit for the success of the Spanish giants over the past few years too. This is a chance for him to step back into the big time.
Martin Jol
Here’s an outsider- could it really happen? Jol was sacked by Levy in 2007, but it would be a bold step to bring him back to finish what he started. He has managed with Hamburg, Ajax, and Fulham since then, and if Spurs approached him he would surely be tempted.
