Tottenham Hotspur supporters will have loved Steven Bergwijn’s latest international display.
The Spurs winger scored two goals for the Netherlands in a friendly victory over Denmark on Saturday night.
Bergwijn’s second was a thing of real beauty, cutting inside Joachim Andersen and curling beyond Kasper Schmeichel from a difficult angle.
Here’s what co-commentator Terry Gibson said about the former PSV Eindhoven attacker.
He said on Sky Sports: “Top quality goal. Bergwijn gets on the ball, Frenkie de Jong lays it on side. One on one against Joachim Andersen who probably shouldn’t allow him cut back on his right foot. Bergwijn finds the gap, creates the space but then has to be find the skill to wrap his foot around the ball. 10 out of 10. Absolutely brilliant goal.”
Gamechanger
Based on this showing, Tottenham fans might want to see more of the 24-year-old.
He has undeniable quality and yet the Dutchman has only started one Premier League outing since August.
Earlier in the season, Bergwijn came off the bench to score two stoppage-time goals in helping Tottenham to a 3-2 victory away to Leicester City.
Not only is he brilliant on his day, but an absolute game-changer and maybe, just maybe, Antonio Conte will call on him a little more between now and the end of the campaign.
Then again, you have to ask whether Bergwijn has been doing enough behind the scenes to impress the Italian manager.
The Spurs boss is as no-nonsense as they come, with a very low tolerance for those who don’t give 100 percent.
There is an argument to be made that Conte would certainly reward Bergwijn with more opportunities if his hunger was optimal but, considering he still barely plays, even off the bench, it might not be.
