Manchester United attacking midfielder Juan Mata failed to make a huge impact against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns in the Premier League on Monday.
Juan Mata’s long-term future at Manchester United has been cast into doubt following the club’s high-profile acquisitions in the summer transfer window.
The 26-year-old attacking midfielder joined the Red Devils from Chelsea in January 2014 for a transfer fee of £37.1 million, but he has failed to justify that price-tag so far.
With manager Louis van Gaal not lacking in attacking talent, there have been suggestions that Mata could be the one to make way and be used as a back-up player as the season progresses.
However, with captain Wayne Rooney still serving his suspension, Mata was given yet another chance to impress in attacking midfield against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns in the Premier League on Monday.
The Spain international, though, failed to make the most of the chance he got against the Baggies and had a largely mixed game.
| Position | Team | Match | Chances created | Total Shots | Shots on Target | Total Pass | Accurate Pass | Successful Final Third Passes | Touches | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Juan Mata | MF | Man Utd | West Brom vs Man Utd | 0 | 2 | 0 | 49 | 44 | 16 | 53 | 72 |
As the stats above show, Mata did not create a single chance against West Brom during the 72 minutes he was on the pitch.
The former Valencia star tried his luck on goal twice, but neither of his attempts was on target. Mata, though, had a 89.8% pass accuracy, took 53 touches and played 16 successful final third passes.
Overall, Mata did not have a great time on the pitch against West Brom. Although he showed in flashes what he is capable of, he just did not do enough as United stuttered to a 2-2 draw at The Hawthorns.
