The Southampton winger was linked with a move to Sheffield Wednesday in August.

It’s more than a month since Josh Sims’ name was mentioned in conjunction with a possible move to Sheffield Wednesday, but the Southampton winger has yet to make an appearance since then.

So could the Owls revive their interest in the January transfer window? HITC Sport takes a look…

Where is he?

Injured, by all accounts – although with what and for how long is unclear, with little information divulged by either player or club. He hasn’t even played for Southampton’s Under-23s this season, let alone the first team.

Do Sheffield Wednesday still need him?

A lack of pace has often hindered the Owls throughout the past two campaigns and though Sunday’s 3-0 win against Leeds showed what Carlos Carvalhal’s side are capable of, those sorts of performances have been all too few and far between. In games against opponents who are less open than Leeds were, a player like Sims, whose direct wing play lit up St Mary’s at times last season, could be extremely useful.

Can they get him?

Not on a permanent deal that’s for sure, owing as much to Sims’ standing at Southampton – who signed him to a new three-year deal earlier this year – as Wednesday’s battle to stay onside of the Football League’s Financial Fair Play restrictions. But a loan could be possible if he’s fit and not in Mauricio Pellegrino’s plans by the new year.

Carvalhal has loaned Premier League wingers in each of the past two campaigns, only to complain afterwards that they were not up to speed and could not be properly integrated as a result. The Saints are likely to consider how those players fared – Aiden McGeady and Callum McManaman – before coming to any decision.
