Fund manager Schroders said its assets under management rose to a record $452.5bn in the first quarter of 2014 after it took in new money across a range of products.

Around 500 'leading City practitioners' had lunch at the Guildhall on Wednesday to hear the official results of the 31st Thomson Extel research Survey, which reflects the views of 1,037 buy-side firms, 151 brokerage firms and 298 of Europe's largest quoted companies. Deutsche Sale Won't Encourage Industry Consolidation

Well, Martin Gilbert's Aberdeen Asset Management finally emerged as the victor in the battle to acquire Deutsche Bank's UK fund management unit, in a deal worth around £265m. But the fight went down to the wire, and a number of rival firms looked seriously at acquiring the whole, or parts of, the business. Some now feel that firms like Schroders and BNP Paribas, who lost out on the Deutsche prize, will continue their quests to build up their asset management businesses and that, as a result, we could soon see further consolidation in the industry. But others point out that deals will only be done if they are strategically sound.
