Arsenal break Preston hearts as Olivier Giroud scores last-minute winner

Arsenal's Olivier Giroud celebrates after the game

Arsenal flirted with danger before coming from behind to win a hugely entertaining Cup tie, proving in the process that the game of two halves is a cliche that can occasionally be descriptive. They were well on top even before Olivier Giroud’s late winner but put in such a disjointed first half performance that the Championship side could easily have turned round two or three in front.

New recruit John Swift brings Jaap Stam’s Reading quick return to beat Preston

Reading's manager Jaap Stam

Jaap Stam won the treble during his first season as a player in England, and although the former Manchester United defender’s first campaign as a manager in the country cannot end in similar glory, there was enough in this debut to encourage the Dutchman and fans of his new club. Reading, 17th in the Championship last season, played with verve and purpose and deservedly beat Preston thanks to a fine goal by another impressive new signing, 21-year-old midfielder John Swift.
