As the Wales players made their way on to the team bus after the game, fuelled with optimism but looking physically and mentally spent, three million people back home were saluting their heroes. Yet for Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and everybody else connected with Chris Coleman’s team, it was the 24,000 Wales fans inside the stadium who deserved all the praise.

Wayne Hennessey expects to be fit for Wales’ showdown with England

Wayne Hennessey will have an injection in his back to enable him to be fit to face England on Thursday after he was ruled out of the opening group game against Slovakia only a couple of hours before kick-off. The Wales No1 suffered a back spasm, forcing Chris Coleman to give Danny Ward, the 22-year-old Liverpool goalkeeper, his first start for his country.
