Having collected GB’s first-ever diving gold in the synchronised 3m springboard in company with Chris Mears, Laugher again produced his best form when it mattered to finish second behind China’s outstanding Cao Yuan.

Charley Hull finished two shots off the bronze medal in the women’s Olympic golf competition won by Inbee Park. The South Korean finished on 16 under par, five shots clear of New Zealand’s Lydia Ko. A late flurry of birdies from the Kiwi, including one on the 18th green, relegated China’s Shanshan Feng to third.

Her winning score of 93.857 was the third highest of all time, beaten only by herself. Still, though, a high‑quality competition boiled down a thrilling last ditch finish in the baking Rio sun.
