According to a report from the Express, Manchester City bigwigs were worried that Ilkay Gundogan would join Liverpool, before the Germany international agreed to terms on a deal with at the Etihad.

According to a report from the London Evening Standard, the 28-year-old is on the verge of signing a new three-year deal with City, putting an end to speculation linking him with a move away from the club.

Gundogan is a truly top class performer, and he has proven to be a superb signing for Manchester City since joining them from Borussia Dortmund for £20 million three years ago.

The German played under current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp during the pair’s time together at Dortmund.

He raved about the Reds manager when speaking to reporters in 2018, as quoted by AS:

“With Kloppo everything really started for me. Even though I won’t forget Michael Oenning and Dieter Hecking [Gundogan’s former coaches at Bochum and Nurnberg respectively], Kloppo was like a father to me and his speeches can be extremely motivating.”

It seems as though Gundogan will be going nowhere, however.

And that will be a shame for Liverpool fans, because Klopp could really do with someone like the German in his midfield.
