Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk has told The Guardian that he has voted for Manchester City star Raheem Sterling for the PFA Player of the Year award.

Voting rules prevent players from backing their own teammates, and Liverpool ace Van Dijk – who himself is likely to get a lot of votes from his peers for the prestigious individual accolade – has cast his vote in favour of Sterling.

The 27-year-old Netherlands international has also explained why he voted for the 24-year-old England international – who can operate as a winger or as an attacking midfielder and was on the books of Liverpool from 2010 until 2015 before leaving for Premier League rivals City.

Van Dijk told The Guardian: “I voted for Raheem Sterling. I did what I thought and I thought he deserves it. He’s had a fantastic season.

“I think I could have voted for Bernardo Silva as well and another couple of players from Manchester City.

“But I am just being honest. I think he has improved a lot as a player. We will see if he wins it.”
