According to a report from French media outlet Foot Mercato, Tottenham and Manchester City are set to go head to head in the race to sign Toulouse youngster Adil Taoui in January.

The 17-year-old winger is one of the most highly rated young players on the continent, and if Spurs manage to beat City to his signature, they would be making a big statement.

City are currently the best team in the Premier League, if not Europe, and Tottenham cannot compete with the Manchester giants financially, so they have to be thrifty in their player recruitment.

Signing young players with loads of potential is one way for the north London club to compete with the riches of the likes of City, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Taoui would certainly fit into that category.

The Toulouse starlet can play on either wing, or as an auxiliary centre-forward. He possesses exceptional technical ability, and seems to have all of the ingredients needed to be a success in the game.

To be attracting the attention from City, Taoui must be a real star in the making, and if Tottenham can beat their Premier league rivals in the race for his signature, it would bode extremely well for their chances of success in the future.

The Sun claims that he could be available for just £4.5 million in January, and that would represent a real bargain for whichever club ends up signing him.
