Glasgow Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield, who joined Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox club in the summer, is the new Canada captain.
Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield
Arfield, who joined Steven Gerrard’s Rangers in the summer transfer window, has taken over Atiba Hutchinson as the captain of Canada on a permanent basis.
The 29-year-old Rangers midfielder has played 13 times for Canada, scoring one goal in the process.
Canada manager Herdman has explained the decision to make Rangers ace Arfield the national team captain.
Herdman told TSN about Hutchinson: “Look he has just a great presence. The conversations we had pre-camp around leadership and captaincy, what he knows is that he can support someone like Scott who might have a longer future in the game.
“And he’s ready to hand that baton over and be a mentor, a sounding board for Scott. They balance each other off really well.
“Scott brings a super-outgoing positive energy and he’s vocal. Whereas Atiba is reflective, quiet, unassuming, but he’s dialed into everything.”

Another leader
James Tavernier is the Rangers captain, while Connor Goldson is the Gers’ vice-captain, and it seems that manager Gerrard may have another leader in the dressing room in Arfield.
Herdman’s comments underline the leadership quality that Arfield has, and they suggest that Rangers may have a leader in the midfielder, and it can only be good for Rangers in the coming months.
Rangers are aiming to win the Scottish Premiership title this season, as well as make an impact in the Europa League.
