Rangers beat Rapid Vienna 3-1 at Ibrox on Thursday night.

Joe Worrall of Rangers looks on prior to the UEFA Europa League Group G match between Rangers and SK Rapid Wien at Ibrox Stadium on October 4, 2018 in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

Rangers defender Joe Worrall has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he thinks Alfredo Morelos is similar to Luis Suarez – but boss Steven Gerrard feels it’s unfair to compare the two.

The Gers needed to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat to Livingston as they took on Rapid Vienna in the Europa League on Thursday, and did so with a fine performance.

Rangers did fall 1-0 down to Veton Berisha’s opener, but Morelos equalised, before James Tavernier scored from the penalty spot when Morelos was fouled, and the Colombian added the late third.

Morelos was involved in all three goals, and has now hit eight goals in 17 games under Gerrard, with Rangers experiencing both the good and the bad of the former HJK Helinski hitman.

Morelos has picked up five bookings and a red card already this season, and has received major criticism for his disciplinary problems, but there is no doubting his quality.

That fine line has resulted in defender Joe Worrall offering a huge comparison, as the Rangers ace has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he thinks Morelos is in some way similar to controversial Barcelona hitman Luis Suarez.

“It shows Alfredo’s unbelievable character as a human being and a player and to bounce back from the criticism after Livingston to produce a performance like that,” said Worrall. “He was top class and I wouldn’t like to play against him. He’s a bully, a horrible player to play against. He’s not a nice striker who is easy on the eye – he’s a menace to defenders. He’s left me with a few bruises from training but he’s brilliant to have in your team and he’s a bit like Luis Suarez-type player. He lives on the edge. One minute he’s close to getting sent off and the next he’s scoring goals for fun and you need that as a striker,” he added.

Rangers boss Gerrard played alongside Suarez at Liverpool, meaning a response was inevitable – and he has told the Daily Record that he thinks it’s unfair right now as Suarez is a world-class player, but there are similarities behaviour-wise.

“Luis is a lot older, a lot more experienced, he’s a world-class player, probably the best I played with. So it’s unfair to compare them just yet,” said Gerrard. “But there are a lot of similarities in behaviour. They both play on the edge. They want to win, be it in training or games. They can both finish, they score big goals, they are relentless in the way they play and don’t stop pressing. So yeah there are similarities, but Alfredo is still a young lad who is still learning and growing. I think it’s a bit unfair to compare him to Suarez,” he added.
