It appears that a number of Tottenham fans are ready to see Erik Lamela finally start a Premier League game this season after his superb performance in the Champions League tie with Barcelona on Wednesday night.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men now face an uphill battle trying to qualify out of their group as they sit six points off the top two after losing 4-2 in a sensational game at Wembley.
The Catalan giants were irresistible going forward and capitalised on some bizarre mistakes from the home side’s defence – particularly from Hugo Lloris – but Spurs’ fightback in the second-half sparked one of the more remarkable atmospheres Wembley has seen in recent years as the fans started to believe that Pochettino’s men actually had a chance of coming back after being 2-0 down.
Harry Kane halved the deficit and Lamela’s deflected effort took to score to 3-2 after Lionel Messi had got onto the scoresheet just before the hour having pulled the strings for most of the contest up until that point.
Spurs undoubtedly gave Barca a good scare as they chased an equaliser, but the wind was knocked out of their sails as Messi made the score 4-2 late on.
It was a brilliant second-half display from Tottenham after they barely landed a punch during the first 45 minutes. And Lamela’s display was a catalyst for their recovery.
The Argentinian often looked to be Spurs’ most dangerous player and it was probably not surprise that cramp seemed to force him off as he never seemed to stop running. The display certainly managed to spark his side into life, and a number of fans are now urging Pochettino to hand him a league start for the first time this season at the weekend.
