Steven Gerrard has been prolific in the transfer market for Rangers since taking over, signing more than a dozen players.

Most of them are only just getting started at Ibrox after arriving late in the transfer window.

Yet perhaps the very best signing by Rangers in 2018 came courtesy of former boss Graeme Murty.

Step forward young talent, Glenn Middleton.

Middleton scored two excellent goals last night in Rangers’ Cup win over Ayr, his second and third goals for the club in 10 appearances, most of which have come from the bench.

Still only 18-years-old, Middleton is proving to be more than a signing for the future, he looks ready now.

Middleton was a surprise signing from Norwich City in January, where he was only playing for the Canaries’ under-23 team.

Murty previously worked at Norwich as a youth coach, and that’s how he knew about Middleton.

He looked to his former club for two players, one who didn’t work out in defender Russell Martin, and one where they look to have hit the jackpot with Middleton.

Smartly, the one who was poor was only on loan, and Rangers paid up to land Middleton on a permanent deal.

New manager Steven Gerrard is now reaping the rewards, easing the winger in slowly. Bearing in mind his potential, Middleton could turn out to be the best of the bunch he currently has.
