Rangers reportedly paid just £200,000 to bring James Tavernier to Ibrox.

It looks remarkable now that Rangers paid just £200,000 to sign defender James Tavernier.

Rangers were in the Scottish Championship at the time when they swooped on Wigan Athletic to sign a defender who looked like he may struggle to fulfil his potential.

At 23, when he signed, Rangers were already Tavernier’s 10th club, after a series of loan spells away from Newcastle, and that figure is not counting his early years as a Leeds trainee.

At Rangers he found a home, and is one of the team’s shining lights.

Tavernier played a key role in Rangers winning promotion to the top flight and he has been a near ever present since.

He has landed the club captaincy, a role which he relishes, and last week he was rewarded with his second new contract in a year, committing his future to Rangers until 2022.

The right-back will acknowledge that he still has areas of his game to work on, but he has made real defensive improvements since Steven Gerrard took over.

He still possesses a dynamic threat going forward, and and the weekend he scored an impressive free-kick in the 5-1 win over St Johnstone.

Tavernier has made 146 appearances for Rangers already, scoring 29 goals. Really impressive from a full-back.

With a contract until 2022 there is a lot more of each to come.

Not bad for £200,000.
