The lack of investment at Swansea City has given young players a chance and Joe Rodon is one of those to have taken full advantage so far this season.

Formerly the captain of Swansea’s U23s, Rodon has made the step up to the senior side after Alfie Mawson, Federico Fernandez and Kyle Bartley were all allowed to leave during the summer. So far, the 20-year-old has started six of the Swans’ seven Championship games.

Although his fine displays at the heart of Graham Potter’s back line have raised speculation about his long term future at the Liberty Stadium.

According to the Sun (16 September, page 63), Rodon is out of contract in June next year and Swansea are desperate to tie him down to a new deal. Premier League champions Manchester City have been eyeing Rodon since he was playing for the academy side and Pep Guardiola will have been impressed by his step up to the starting XI of late.

Interestingly, Rodon’s ball-playing style has led to comparisons with City’s own £47.5 million centre-back John Stones.

Swansea are understood to be planning talks with Rodon in the hope that they can ward off interest from elsewhere.
