Newcastle United's poor start to the season continued on Saturday afternoon as they were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal at St. James' Park.

The Magpies picked up just one point in their first four games of the season, though a tough fixture list – which has seen them take on Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester City.

It was Arsenal in Rafael Benitez's way on Saturday, and the Magpies again slipped to a defeat after a poor second half showing.

Granit Xhaka opened the scoring with a fine free kick, before Alexandre Lacazette's blocked shot fell for Mesut Ozil to place home the second.

Ciaran Clark did pull one back for Newcastle, but it was another defeat for the Magpies, who have still yet to win a game this season in any competition.

Benitez made some curious selection decisions, leaving Kenedy, Jonjo Shelvey and Salomon Rondon on the bench, and he bizarrely brought in Isaac Hayden for a start.

Hayden, as reported by The Chronicle, submitted a transfer request this summer in an attempt to leave Newcastle and return to the south of the country, but the ex-Arsenal midfielder was in the side on Saturday.

Hayden struggled, and Newcastle fans took to Twitter to slam his performance, suggesting that he clearly doesn't want to play for Newcastle anymore and should be sold in January, with one fan branding him a 'borderline disgrace' as supporters were angry that Benitez even picked him in the team after he asked to leave.
