Barry Ferguson has claimed in his Daily Record column that Lee Wallace is surplus to requirements at Rangers despite a mini revival of late that ended in Europa League omission.

The 31-year-old has been on the sidelines at Ibrox ever since he and Kenny Miller were suspended by the club for a changing-room fracas that occurred after the 5-0 defeat to Celtic under Graeme Murty last season.

Wallace, who was previously club captain of the side before James Tavernier was given the role, has remained at Rangers while Miler joined Livingston as player-manager and then immediately to Dundee.

The left-back, who is a 10-time Scotland international, was given his first Rangers appearance since September 2017 against Motherwell as a late sub but has since been left out of the Europa League squad. Ferguson says he must leave.

“As for Wallace, it’s an even more difficult situation. At least Kenny [Miller] has been able to move on but Lee now appears to be stuck there with little prospect of getting back into the team,” Ferguson said.

“It did look as if Steven Gerrard was going to give him an opportunity but Wallace was then left out of the squad for the Europa League. That will have been a really sore one to take as it suggests he’s surplus to requirements.

“I’m sad about that because I really rate him. He has something to offer Rangers and Scotland for that matter. Unfortunately, he’s going to have to move elsewhere to get a regular game.”

Wallace’s future at Ibrox is a doubt anyway without the other factors, as he entered the final 12 months of his current deal which expires on May 31.

Since joining the club from Hearts in the summer of 2011, Wallace has gone on to make 260 appearances for the Light Blues including 25 goals and 58 assists from the left side of defence.

It remains to be seen if Gerrard will give Wallace a chance in the league or indeed in the Scottish Cup and League Cup.
