Dominic Matteo has told Leeds United's official website that he believes Marcelo Bielsa's style of play is similar to the likes of his former club Liverpool as well as Manchester City.

The former Leeds defender spoke of how impressed he has been by Bielsa's tactics, which has included a high press and an attacking tempo that has seen the Whites earn wins over Derby County, Stoke City, Norwich City and Rotherham.

Leeds currently sit at the top of the Championship table despite hardly featuring any of their new signings on a regular basis. Instead, Bielsa has got the best out of last season's squad.

Only Barry Douglas has been a regular of the six new recruits, while Bielsa has improved the likes of Kemar Roofe, Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips and Mateusz Klich. Matteo compared Leeds to Liverpool and Manchester City.

"I had heard of the guy, knew a bit about him," Matteo said. "I thought it was a coup to get him, I thought he would be the signing of the summer. There's not been many changes, he's tinkered it a little bit.

"The ideas he has are very clever, very modern. He's moving with the times, playing such a high press. But your fitness levels have to be extremely high to do that all season.

"Liverpool and Man City are two of the best teams, and they play with a very high press. Leeds have now got to maintain that for the rest of the season."

From their opening six games, Leeds have totalled 14 points but Middlesbrough remain hot on their heels as Bielsa looks to open up an early lead at the top of the Championship table.

They will be looking to open up a lead at the top of the table on Saturday after the international break, as they travel to The Den to face bitter rivals Millwall.
