Glasgow Rangers midfielder Jordan Rossiter was linked with a surprise move away from Ibrox during the most recent January transfer window.

When Rangers’ Europa League squad was announced ahead of the group-stages of the competition, several fans expressed their belief that Jordan Rossiter’s Ibrox career was potentially finished as he was left out of the 45-man squad by Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard’s arrival appeared destined to be a turning point for Rossiter given the pair’s connection from Liverpool, but the talented midfielder is still awaiting his first appearance of the season after sustaining an injury in pre-season.

His omission from the European squad therefore, was an extremely concerning sign and perhaps hints that he has a very long way to go before he proves that can be a key man for the Gers. Nevertheless, Rangers should not regret the decision that they seemingly made when Wigan Athletic came calling during the January transfer window.

The Daily Record reported at the time that the Latics were hoping to sign Rossiter with a ‘low ball bid’. Rangers obviously decided against selling the midfielder.

Some may deem that to be a mistake, especially after he was left out of the Europa League squad. But the Gers surely made the right decision.

If Rossiter’s career never gets going, then the club may be kicking themselves over missing out on a small fee. But that is nothing compared to how much they will kick themselves had they let him go for a bargain fee and he goes on to realise that potential.

On the rare occasions he has played, he has been hugely impressive. If he can get some luck with injuries, then he could prove to be a massive player for Gerrard’s men.

And while some fans understandably doubt whether he will ever prove himself at Ibrox, Rangers taking the gamble and keeping Rossiter could still prove to be a great call.
