Northern Ireland kicked off their UEFA Nations League on Saturday afternoon, but fell to a 2-1 home defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

After missing out on the World Cup due to a play-off defeat to Switzerland, the Green and White Army were back in competitive action on Saturday night, hosting Bosnia and Herzegovina at Windsor Park.

However, Michael O’Neill’s men were left stunned as having dominated the game, Haris Duljevic put the visitors in front in the first half, meeting a cross to score from close range.

Defender Craig Cathcart’s header then sold goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell short, and Elvis Saric nipped in to score to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Substitute striker Will Grigg did pull a goal back for the hosts, but Bosnia held out for the win despite having just 32% of possession and only five shots on goal.

The defeat was hugely disappointing for Northern Ireland having enjoyed so much possession, and Grigg’s goal may have given O’Neill food for thought ahead of Tuesday’s friendly with Israel.

The Wigan man is now pushing for a start ahead of Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty, and fans – both of Northern Ireland and neutrals – took to Twitter to react to Lafferty’s performance.

Lafferty struggled against Bosnia, and fans suggested that he should only be a Plan B now due to his aerial ability, feeling that Northern Ireland have better options in attack now, and don’t need to rely on Lafferty anymore.

Others called him ‘awful’ and accused him of not offering enough in attack, with the 30-year-old – who re-joined Rangers last month – slammed for an underwhelming performance on the international stage.
