Glasgow Rangers midfielder Lassana Coulibaly has made a fantastic start to life on loan at Ibrox.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is seen during the Scottish Premier League between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park Stadium on September 2, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The transfer window may have been shut for less than a week, but Rangers have already played 13 games this season so it is starting to become apparent who is going to be a key man for Steven Gerrard’s side this term and who still has plenty of work to do over the coming months.

The Gers underwent a major squad overhaul over the summer. And while some of the additions were proven at Scottish Premiership level or arrived with big reputations, one of the most intriguing signings was Lassana Coulibaly.

The midfielder is on loan at Ibrox from French top flight side Angers. It would have been a deal that no-one would have seen coming – but there will now be so many Rangers fans who are delighted that the move did take place.

Coulibaly has been the Gers’ surprise of the season so far. There have definitely been other contenders – Ryan Jack or Connor Goldson perhaps spring to mind – but few could have imagined that losing the midfielder to injury would feel like such a blow for the Gers.

Lassana Coulibaly of Rangers is seen during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Rangers and Wigan Athletic at Ibrox Stadium on July 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

He has only made a handful of appearances, but if he keeps this form up, he will undoubtedly be a player that Rangers will want to keep hold of beyond next summer.

He cannot grow complacent. Coulibaly only needs to look at the dramatic decline in Sean Goss’ form last season to see that he cannot allow his standards to drop.

But if he picks up where he left off when he returns to full fitness, then he will arguably go from being the early surprise of the season to a real contender for player of the season by the end of the campaign.
