Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is targeting another defender.

Rangers clinched the signing of Kyle Lafferty yesterday and the Gers are not done in the transfer market yet.

Not only do Rangers need to consider replacing injured star Jamie Murphy, they are also looking at adding a new centre-back.

Gerrard is extremely happy with summer additions Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic and says he wants to help them out.

He believes signing another centre-back will enable him to play three at the back, or simply give one of them a rest.

Gerrard told the club’s official website: “I am still looking, but I have been very, very lucky in the centre-back area getting [Connor] over the line to come and play for us, and Nikola as well have been two rocks for me.

“They have been so consistent from start to finish, and they have certainly helped me in terms of looking for a centre-half as they have been so durable.

“But I would like to get another body in that position. That will give me the luxury to change formation maybe or pull one of those two out in terms of giving them a breather.”

Signing Lafferty gives Rangers an option to play two up front, and one way to accomplish this is with a 3-5-2 formation, for which another centre-back will be needed.

It is unclear who Gerrard’s top centre-back target may be, although one player linked earlier in the summer, Gareth MacAuley, remains available with The Scottish Sun mentioning Rangers’ interest yesterday amid Aberdeen’s desire also to acquire him.
