Championship outfit Aston Villa had reportedly hoped that Scottish Premiership powerhouses Rangers would take Ross McCormack off their hands

It seems that one former Rangers striker is on his way back to Ibrox. But don’t get too excited Aston Villa fans, it’s not Ross McCormack.
According to the Daily Record, Rangers are set to seal the signing of Kyle Lafferty on Wednesday after finally agreeing a fee with Scottish Premiership rivals Hearts for the 30-year-old centre-forward.
And this is the worst possible news for Aston Villa.
According to TEAMtalk, they were hoping to loan out £40,000-a-week misfit McCormack before the end of the transfer window with Rangers one of the few clubs understood to be interested in offering him an escape route.
But with Lafferty heading to Glasgow instead, McCormack remains in limbo. With Alfredo Morelos and Umar Sadiq already at Ibrox, Lafferty’s impending arrival seems to mean that a move for McCormack is off the cards.

TEAMtalk adds that Sunderland have an interest in the former Leeds United, Fulham and Cardiff City goal-machine. But with manager Jack Ross saying he wants budding youngsters over experienced old pros, it seems that McCormack’s chances of a move to the Stadium of Light look slim too.
So Aston Villa are now facing up to five more months with McCormack stuck on the sidelines as an expensive passenger.
