Tottenham Hotspur kicked off their season with a victory against Newcastle for the second year in a row.

This time they won 2-1 through two first half goals from Jan Vertonghen and Dele Alli.

The duo starred at the World Cup for Belgium and England as their teams reached the semi-finals.

It underlined the strength in depth Spurs have in all departments, despite not spending in the summer transfer window.

Clemence hit out at Tottenham's critics, arguing their win proved a point.

Tottenham's ability to beat Newcastle was never really in doubt, and the real test will be when they go up against one of the other top six teams.

Spurs' third game of the season is away at Old Trafford against Manchester United, before facing Liverpool at their new stadium in September.

Those are the games in which Tottenham's transfer market choices will be judged.
