There was undoubtedly plenty of intrigue surrounding Anfield heading into Sunday's clash. It had appeared that Liverpool had clearly made themselves into the team that Manchester City need to fear the most this season, while West Ham's summer business saw the Irons earn a lot of praise.
It appeared, with the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini and the number of exciting signings made, that West Ham would be in a fantastic position to do significantly better than last season. But it appears that much of the pre-season optimism has evaporated somewhat following the clash at Anfield, even though they would have been underdogs on Merseyside.
Liverpool strolled to a dominant win, scoring twice in each half to claim a 4-0 victory. The defeat itself may not have been a huge surprise, but the manner of the loss will undoubtedly concern Pellegrini.
And following the game, a number of supporters were quick to criticise Antonio's display. The winger struggled to make much of an impression on the game, and some of the fans felt that Pellegrini needs to take him out of the side for next Saturday's clash against Bournemouth.
In fact, some were suggesting that it was a major mistake not to sell the former Nottingham Forest ace during the summer. Sky Sports reported in July that Crystal Palace were considering a £15 million bid for the wide-man, and some of the fans suggested that it was a missed opportunity not to cash in.
Here is what some of the West Ham fans made of Antonio's display at Anfield...
Antonio was shocking today, the bloke spends most of his time on the floor— Waller (@waller_whu) August 12, 2018
The season starts next week ⚒ Hopefully Antonio doesn’t— Ross Gooding (@Gooding_WHU) August 12, 2018
Antonio and Masuaku were useless. Proved why he can’t play LB and Antonio should be gone— Terry Adams (@hammertel78) August 12, 2018
I highly doubt Pellegrini will ever put his faith in Antonio ever again and thank god— West Ham News (@whufc_news) August 12, 2018
Antonio, Masuaku and maybe Fredericks need dropping next week. Zabba, Cresswell and Hernandez need to come in for me.— J.Steel.WHU (@BecontreeHammer) August 12, 2018
Why didn’t we jog Antonio on to Palace for £15 million when we had the chance... #whufc— Jack Davies 父 (@JackEDavies) August 12, 2018
Antonio had been by far the worst player in this game. Never start him again. #WHUFC— T0PPAD (@TDphone5) August 12, 2018
Not worried about the result in the slightest, didn’t expect much. But plenty to be concerned about. Antonio woeful, Masuaku showing his defensive weakness. Anderson looked okay, time to draw a line under this and work hard in the week and put it right next week. #whufc— David Bowden (@Bowdenwhu) August 12, 2018
We should’ve sold Antonio when we could— Toby (@TobyWHUFC_) August 12, 2018
