Not so long ago it did not look feasible for Mateusz Klich to have a long-term future at Leeds United.
Much was expected of Klich when he moved to Leeds from FC Twente in the summer of 2017 for a transfer fee reported by The Yorkshire Evening Post to be worth £1.5 million.
The Poland international midfielder failed to make a huge impact at Elland Road in the first half of last season, and the 28-year-old moved to FC Utrecht in the January transfer window on loan until the end of the 2017-18 campaign.
Not many will have expected Klich to be part of Marcelo Bielsa’s squad for the 2018-19 campaign, but the midfielder is still Leeds and has established himself as a key figure for the team already.
The Poland international played well for Leeds against Derby County away from home at the Pride Park Stadium in the Championship on Saturday evening.
Leeds fans have also been impressed by the way the midfielder has become such an important player for Bielsa’s team.
Whooooah! #lufc 1-0 up via Klich! Delighted for Mateusz as he was a yard off the pace last season but has come back strong this season. Preseason he was superb, got his chance and he’s carried it on. #MOT— Tony Dorigo (@tonydorigo) August 11, 2018
Another outstanding performance from this man @Cli5hy again— Helen Walker (@hellsbelles92) August 11, 2018
Klich when you first came to the club I knew you'd be gutted you didn't get the chance to shine last season but you been stunning so far this preseason and these first games keep it up mate— LUFC Allday Everyday (@AndrewjFarnaby) August 11, 2018
Chuffed for @Cli5hy. Great attitude, hard worker and now, two goals to his name. Took the long path to play first team football and I sincerely hope he can keep up this form because he’s a great example of what it means to play for the badge #LUFC #MOT— KlichKlichBoom (@KlichKlichBoom) August 11, 2018
Shackleton coming on and effortlessly taking over where the phenomenal again Klich took off just typified what #lufc were about today. Composed and confident and absolutely ruthless.— Sean G (@SeanyGee) August 11, 2018
