While Rafa Benitez appears to have got little wrong since taking over at Newcastle, one decision he made that many of the supporters have seemingly struggled to get their head around was the call to sign Joselu and then keep the Spaniard while allowing the likes of Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic to leave St James' Park.
Joselu scored just four league goals last season and his performances often saw him slated by several members of the Toon Army. But after Newcastle's spirited performance against Tottenham on the opening day of the new Premier League season, it appears that the 28-year-old may have an opportunity to start winning his critics over.
It was a defeat for the Magpies against Mauricio Pochettino's men, but Joselu showed some real glimpses of quality. His glancing header cancelled out Jan Vertonghen's opener, and there may not be too many better passes than the one that saw the former Stoke man play Kenedy in with the outside of his boot during the second-half.
Unfortunately, the Brazilian was unable to take advantage of the sublime pass, but the ball clearly stuck in the mind of many Newcastle fans following the game.
There was still some criticism for Joselu. However, many accept that he is never going to leave Alan Shearer with something to worry about regarding his goalscoring records on Tyneside and are pleased to see the work-rate from the striker.
Benitez has plenty of strikers at his disposal so it would probably be little surprise if he considered a change for the Magpies' next game, but many supporters were clearly impressed by Joselu and feel that he has staked a claim to keep his place.
Here is what some of the Newcastle fans made of the forward's display against Spurs...
Embarrassed by some Newcastle fans. Joselu was brilliant yesterday yet most want him dropped ? https://t.co/WjPeRPWgsC— SimplyDummett (@SimplyDummett) August 12, 2018
Joselu will start and probably deserves to. Scored a good goal; delicious pass through for Kenedy that should have been tucked away. Thought he had his best game in a Newcastle shirt so to drop him would indeed be ruthless.— Sam GC (@Funguslover) August 12, 2018
Probably Joselu’s best game yesterday so no way can you drop him— Tyler Hutchinson (@HutchTyler) August 12, 2018
I thought Joselu played really well yesterday, that through ball to Kenedy was sublime! #nufc— NUFC Bradders ⚫️⚪️⚽️ (@Bradders4711) August 12, 2018
Thoughts from yesterday:— Jamie (@DubravkaSaves) August 12, 2018
Joselu was immense
Ritchie was on form
Atsu will be dropped from the bench next game
Clark > Schar/Fernandez atm
Rondon and Muto both look sound
Martin Dubravka is worth just as much as Kepa and Alisson#NUFC
What on earth has happened to Joselu, he actually looked like a professional footballer— Luke McCabe (@luke_mccabe) August 11, 2018
